Darlin is the eleventh track from Avril Lavigne's album Goodbye Lullaby.
Background[]
This was one of the first songs Lavigne ever wrote - she composed it when she was an unsigned 15-year-old living in Napanee, Ontario.
“ | It was probably the second song I [ever] wrote; I was trying to figure it all out, | ” |
she recalled to Billboard magazine.
“ | It's really special to me. | ” |
Lavigne said in publicity materials for Goodbye Lullaby:
“ | Whenever I hear 'Darlin,' I think of the family room I wrote it in and playing it for my mom. | ” |
Lavigne was always playing this song for her friends, even before she had a record deal. She told AOL Music she played it to ex-husband and Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley the day she met him when she was 17 and "Complicated" was just coming out. Lavigne recalled:
“ | We were in Vancouver with his band, all hanging out, and I played him that song and then like eight years later he produced it. He remembered it and was like, 'Let's record this song.' So we did. | ” |
Critical reception[]
"Darlin" received mixed-to-negative reviews from music critics. Marcus Gilmer from AvMusic said "The shimmering acoustic-guitar strums, tinkling piano licks, and goopy strings on limp tracks like “Darlin’” and “I Love You” lack the infectious hooks of her best singles as they plod along with little energy".[1] Robert Copsey from Digital Spy commented that the track had "frank and unashamed honesty continues throughout the lion's share of the LP"[2].
Lyrics[]
Darlin', you're hiding in the closet once again
Start smilin'
I know you're tryin', real hard not to turn your head away
Pretty darlin'
Face tomorrow, tomorrow's not yesterday
Yesterday, oh, oh
Pretty please, I know it's a drag
Wipe your eyes and put up your head
I wish you could be happy instead
There's nothing else I can do
Then love you the best that I can
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Darlin', I was there once a while I go
I know, that it's hard to be stuck with people
That you love when nobody trusts
Pretty please, I know it's a drag (I know it's a drag)
Wipe your eyes and put up your head (put up your head)
I wish you could be happy instead
There's nothing else I can do
Then love you the best that I can
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
That I can
Oh, oh, oh
You're not the only one who's been through
I've been there alone and now so are you
I just want you to know
Want you to know it's not your fault
It's not your fault
Oh, oh, you're fault, you're fault
It's not your fault
You're fault, you're fault, you're fault
Pretty please, I know it's a drag (know it's a drag)
Wipe your eyes and put up your head (put up your head)
I wish you could be happy instead
There's nothing else I can do
Then love you the best that I can
Pretty please, I know it's a drag (know it's a drag)
Wipe your eyes and put up your head (put up your head)
I wish you could be happy instead
There's nothing else I can do
Then love you the best that I can
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
That I can
Oh, oh, oh
Darlin, you're hiding in the closet once again
Start smilin'
