Falling Fast is a song recorded by Avril Lavigne for her self-titled fifth studio album. It was one of two tracks on the album written solely by Lavigne, the other being "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet". The song was produced by Lavigne's husband Chad Kroeger of the band Nickelback. "Falling Fast" was heavily compared to the work of Taylor Swift due to the country-influenced song's appearance on a primarily pop-influenced album.

Background[]

"Falling Fast" is an acoustic pop song with influences of country, causing it to be compared to the work of Taylor Swift. The song lasts for a total of three minutes and thirteen seconds. It is one of two songs from the album to be written solely by Lavigne, the other being "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet". Many of Lavigne's fans thought the song resembled the work of her previous studio album, Goodbye Lullaby, which was the most mellow album of her career thus far and featured prominent acoustics on several of the tracks.

Critical reception[]

The song received positive reviews from critics, who praised Lavigne's shift towards a more acoustic, country-driven sound on the track, although it was heavily compared to the work of Taylor Swift, known for her prominent country-pop influences throughout her music. Jason Lipshutz of Billboard was one of the first to compare the track to a Taylor Swift track, stating, "The song's breathy delivery, hushed rock elements and crystallized melody would all be at home on a Taylor Swift album."[1] Amy Sciarretto of PopCrush, however, compared the track to the work of fellow Canadian Sarah McLachlan and called "Falling Fast" the album's most vulnerable cut.[2]

Sam Lansky of Idolator reacted positively to the track, calling it "airy and elegant, the most outright sweet thing here".[3] Bradley Stern of MuuMuse complimented the "featherlight" track and praised its ability to "allow[s] Avril to fall preciously in love above the light, wispy production."[4] In a more negative review of the track, Craig Manning of AbsolutePunk compared both "Falling Fast" and "Hush Hush" to the musical stylings of Lavigne's previous studio effort Goodbye Lullaby, calling them "similar bores".[5]

Lyrics[]

I woke up and saw the sun today
You came by without a warning
You put a smile on my face
I want that for every morning

What is it I'm feeling?
'Cause I can't let it go
If seeing is believing,
Then I already know

I'm fallin' fast
I hope this lasts
I'm fallin' hard for you
I say, let's take a chance
Take it while we can
I know you feel it too
I'm fallin' fast
I'm fallin' fast

Doesn't matter what we do
You make everything seem brighter
I never knew I needed you
Like a sad song needs a sea of lighters

What is it I'm feeling?
'Cause I can't let it go
If seeing is believing,
Then I already know

I'm fallin' fast
God, I hope this lasts
'Cause I'm fallin' hard for you
I say, let's take a chance
Take it while we can
'Cause I know you feel it too
I'm fallin' fast
I'm fallin' fast

I hope you know I hope it lasts
I'm fallin' hard, I'm fallin' fast
We can go, no holdin' back

I hope you know, I hope it lasts
I'm fallin' hard, I'm fallin' fast
For you
We can go, no holding back

I'm fallin' fast
I hope this lasts
I'm fallin' hard for you
I say, let's take a chance
Take it while we can
I know you feel it too
I'm fallin' fast
I'm fallin' fast
