Everybody Hurts is a song recorded by Avril Lavigne for her fourth studio album, Goodbye Lullaby. It was written by Avril Lavigne and Evan Taubenfeld and produced by Lavigne's ex-husband and friend Deryck Whibley.

Background[]

Lavigne spoke about the track in "The Making of Goodbye Lullaby", a video released exclusively with the iTunes edition of the album that documented the making of the album:

'Everybody Hurts' is a song that I co-wrote with one of my best friends, Evan Taubenfeld. This song is a song that talks about how... 'Yeah, okay, this is life.' We're all going to experience different levels of pain, some more than others. On a daily basis [...] or weekly, or yearly, whatever. I know I'm super sensitive, I'm very emotional, my feelings get hurt easily. I hurt, and I hurt hard, and I love, and I love hard. And 'Everybody Hurts' is a song that talks about, 'Yeah... This is life.' It is an emotional rollercoaster ride. And my message is... 'Yeah, this hurts, and we all hurt, and we're going to experience that emotion and that pain and that feeling at some point in life', and my message is that... Hold your head up high. Be strong, get through it, it's going to be okay. It's okay to be afraid.[1]

She later told Billboard that the song is "different... but not different to stray away from who I am or what I am."[2]

Live performances[]

The song was performed throughout the majority of the Black Star Tour. During the South American leg of the tour, it was performed twice — at her second concert in São Paulo, at her Citibank Hall concert. It was not performed during the European leg of the tour, however, it was added to the setlist for the Canadian leg of the tour in the encore, preceded by "Nobody's Home" and followed by "Complicated". At select shows throughout the course of the tour, Lavigne's friend and co-writer on the track Evan Taubenfeld came on stage to perform the song with her.

Critical reception[]

Critics were divided on the track, with many stating that a cover of the R.E.M. track of the same name would have suited Lavigne better. Andy Greenwald of Entertainment Weekly criticized "Everybody Hurts", stating that it "somehow manages to be less deep than the R.E.M. standard".[3] Jody Rosen of Rolling Stone called the song a "tender consolation" and stated that it was one of the many "flavors" of "catchy tunes" seen on the "sturdy pop-radio record".[4] Josh Langhoff of PopMatters was a bit more critical of the track, however: "Tunes like 'Everybody Hurts' and "I Love You" are solid, but they don’t attain the gloopy nirvana of Avril’s 2007 hit "When You're Gone".[5] Jonathan Keefe of Slant Magazine stated that on both "I Love You" and "Everybody Hurts", Lavigne sounds "disconnected and aloof".[6] The Village Voice was one of many to criticize both "Wish You Were Here" and "Everybody Hurts" for not being covers of songs that would have better fit on the album (referring to Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" and R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts").[7]

Lyrics[]

Don't know, don't know if I can do this on my own
Why do you have to leave, me
It seems, I'm losing something deep inside of me
Hold on, onto me

Now I see
Now I see

Everybody hurts some days
It's okay to be afraid
Everybody hurts
Everybody screams
Everybody feels this way
And it's okay
La di da di da
It's okay

It feels like nothing really matters anymore
When you're gone
I can't breathe
And I know you never meant to make me feel this way
This can't be happening

Now I see (now I see)
Now I see

Everybody hurts some days
It's okay to be afraid
Everybody hurts
Everybody screams
Everybody feels this way
And it's okay
La di da di da
It's okay
La la la la la

So many questions so much on my mind
So many answers I can't find
I wish I could turn back the time
I want to

Everybody hurts some days (some days)
Everybody hurts some days (some days)
Everybody hurts some days (some days)
Its okay to be afraid (afraid)

Everybody hurts
Everybody screams
Everybody feels this way
Its okay
La di da di da
It's okay
La la la la la
It's okay

Everybody hurts some days
Its okay to be afraid

Everybody hurts some days
Yeah we all feel pain
Everybody feels this way
It'll be okay
Can't somebody take me away to a better place
Everybody feels this way

La di da di da
It's okay
La la la la la
It's okay
La di da di da
It's okay
La la la la la
It's okay
