Love Sux is Avril Lavigne's seventh studio album, released on February 25, 2022. The album marks Avril's return to her Pop Punk routes and is her most critically acclaimed album.
Background[]
Following the release of Lavigne's previous studio album Head Above Water (2019) Lavigne mentioned in a May 2020 interview with American Songwriter magazine that she would "like to release some music in 2021 and that she's started working on new material, which could be the basis of her next album".[1] In December 2020, Lavigne confirmed she was recording new music with producers John Feldmann, Mod Sun, Travis Barker and Machine Gun Kelly.[2] "Flames", a collaboration between Mod Sun and Lavigne, was eventually released on January 8, 2021.[3][4] In the same month, Lavigne confirmed through social media further new music for the first half of 2021,[5] later confirming recording for the album had been completed.[6] On July 16, 2021, Willow Smith released her fourth studio album, titled Lately I Feel Everything, with one of the tracks, "Grow", featuring Avril Lavigne and Travis Barker.[7] A music video for the song was released in October of the same year.[8]
In September 2021, Lavigne attended the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards and confirmed in an interview that new music was to be released in October.[9] On October 28, 2021, Lavigne performed on Travis Barker's livestream show, Travis Barker's House of Horrors.[10] On November 3, Lavigne announced she had signed with Barker's label, DTA Records.[11] On November 5, Lavigne announced her new single titled "Bite Me", which was released on November 10.[12] On January 13, 2022, Lavigne announced the second single from the album titled "Love It When You Hate Me" (featuring Blackbear) for the next day, along with the title of Love Sux and the release date of February 25, 2022.[13] She confirmed via her Instagram stories that Love Sux will have a deluxe version. Just days before the albums release, on February 22, 2022, the whole album leaked online.
On November 15, Lavigne officially announced the deluxe edition of the album.
Composition and themes[]
Love Sux was described by Lavigne in an interview with Entertainment Weekly as her "most alternative record I've made from front to back", further explaining "most of my albums have like pop songs, ballads, and it's quite diverse. The people I worked with really understood me and come from that genre of music".[14] She described the recording of the album as feeling as though she was "back in high school hanging out with the type of people [she] grew up with, and it was just effortless."[14]
