Push is a song recorded by Avril Lavigne for her fourth studio album, Goodbye Lullaby. Avril's friend and former guitarist Evan Taubenfeld co-wrote the track with her, while Avril's ex-husband Deryck Whibley handled the production of the song. Taubenfeld also provided backing vocals on the song and lead vocals throughout the bridge. "Push" was released as a promotional radio-only single exclusively in Japan on February 20, 2012. It peaked at number 35 on the Japan Hot 100. Lavigne has stated that "Push" and "Goodbye" are her favorite songs from Goodbye Lullaby.

Background[]

In a track-by-track commentary on her official VEVO account, Avril spoke about the meaning behind "Push", stating:

'Push' is definitely one of my favorite songs on this record. All my girlfriends love it. It's a song... about fighting for love, believing in love, and when you're fighting, shut up and move forward and move along and let's do this because we love each other. [1]

She added that it came from "a very confident strong place, and a firm place, and a place of like, putting your foot down and saying like, 'Come on, what are we doing here? Let's just work this out.'" [2]

Release[]

Prior to the release of Goodbye Lullaby, Lavigne confirmed her hopes to release "Push" as the second single from Goodbye Lullaby after "What the Hell". [3] On March 24, 2011, Lavigne asked her fans via Twitter which song should be the second single from Goodbye Lullaby, giving them the choice between "Push" and "Smile". [4] Most fans voted for "Smile", which was ultimately chosen as the album's second single. "Push" was rumored to be the third single for a long time, though, although Lavigne released "Wish You Were Here" as the third single instead and hinted that it may be the final single from the album, despite Lavigne's previous hinting that "Push" and "Black Star" would both be released at some point. Although "Wish You Were Here" was the album's final single, Lavigne released "Push" as a promotional single in Japan on February 20, 2012, where it peaked at number 35 on the Japan Hot 100.[5] "Push" was also released as a one-track CD single exclusively in Japan in order to promote the single. [6][7]

Live performances[]

Lavigne added "Push" to the setlist for her Black Star Tour. Most of the performances of the song were acoustic.

Critical reception[]

"Push" received mixed reviews from critics. Ben Ratliff of The New York Times and Adam Knott of Sputnikmusic both compared Lavigne's vocals on "Push" to that of fellow Canadian Alanis Morissette. [8][9] Jonathan Keefe of Slant Magazine criticized "Push," "Wish You Were Here," and "Smile", pointing that "all mistake having a potty mouth for having an actual personality." [10] Alex Lai of Contactmusic.com, however, gave a positive review of the track, calling it an "immediate improvement" from the album's previous track, "What the Hell". [11]

Lyrics[]

Been seeing too much of you lately
And you're starting to get on my nerves
This is exactly what happened last time
And it's not what we deserve
It's a, a waste of my time lately
And I'm running out of words
If it's really meant to be
Then you can find a way to say

That maybe you should just shut up
Even when it gets tough
Baby 'cause this is love
And you know when push comes to shove
It's gonna take the both of us
Baby, this is love
Baby, this is love, love, love, love

It's really great to be with you
This is how I could spend my life
But I'm capable of taking care of myself
So if you fuck this up then go take a hike
It's a waste of my time shaking,
I'm not going out to search
If it's really meant to be,
Then you could find a way to say

That maybe you should just shut up
Even when it gets tough
Baby cause this is love
And you know when push comes to shove
It's gonna take the both of us
Baby, this is love
Baby, this is love

You and me
We can both start over
Just the two of us
We can get a little closer
So follow me
Honestly
And you will see

That maybe you should just shut up
Even when it gets tough
Baby 'cause this is love
And you know when push comes to shove
It's gonna take the both of us
Baby, this is love
Baby, this is love

That maybe you should just shut up
Even when it gets tough
Baby 'cause this is love
And you know when push comes to shove
It's gonna take the both of us
Baby, this is love
Baby, this is love, love, love, love
